We’re Not Supposed to Parent Alone!

I don’t mean that a child needs two parents, or that co-parents need to be on the same parenting page. But that as parents we need other parents around us, to support US.

I feel lucky that I still love, and more importantly, LIKE the man I co-parent with. I’m married to him and largely we are on the same page when it comes to our parenting values. We support each other.

BUT I still need others around me.

I have friends who are parents, friends who aren’t, family members that have raised children, some that haven’t and they ALL support me.

But I STILL need others around me.

I need community, non-judgemental community that KNOWS that I am good, KNOWS that I am doing the best I can, KNOWS that my children are good, and that I can figure out what my family needs.

I use the connection they provide, their good attention to allow myself to think well and to heal from what prevents good thinking. I use their patience, respect and trust that, in whatever small steps, I am leading my family towards good things, that I may not know what those good things look or feel like yet, but I (and my family) am on that road.

I believe we ALL need that connection and community, not just parents, but as a parent it’s easy to feel isolated.

Parenting can be all consuming.

We DEEPLY care about our children and our role as their parent. That care can feel overwhelming at times, especially when things are not going as smoothly as we feel they SHOULD. When that happens we can feel even more isolated.

At Hand in Hand we strive to support parents when parenting gets hard.

Katy is a truly brilliant instructor. She is clearly so dedicated, so in tune, so thoughtful, so caring. She really held the space in such a calm, loving way. And I feel changed by this experience. She has given me such an incredible gift as a parent.” Alice – Mum of two.
